In Lisbon, Portugal, I took time to explore the history of the Portuguese famous explorer Vasco Da Gama who was the first European to reach India by sea.

His initial voyage to India by way of Cape of Good Hope was the first to link Europe and Asia by an ocean route, connecting the Atlantic and the Indian oceans.

I wanted to find out what motivated his great adventure and how did the Portuguese benefited from his exploration.

I visited his resting place (Tomb) at the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. He was buried at this Monastery in 1880.

The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.

I also visited the Tower of Belem, It is often portrayed as a symbol of Europe’s Age of Discoveries and as a metonym for Portugal or Lisbon, given its landmark status.

It was also the gateway to the world of Portuguese exploration.

At the Jeronimos Monastery I felt the amazing power of God’s divine presence and knelt down to pray for our great country Nigeria.

Amazing lessons learnt!
