It was a great privilege and honour to host the Delta State born Nigerian former Super Eagles and Feyenoord FC Rotterdam Football player Mr. Mike Obiku, at our home.
Mike Obiku is currently a coach at Feyenoord Rotterdam’s Soccer Schools and has been living in Rotterdam since 1992. All these years, I have heard so many good things about him but had never met him.
I remember vividly as a young secondary school boy, I went to Warri Stadium to watch him while he was playing for NNPC FC, Warri. He went on to play for defunct Flash Flamingoes FC Benin-City and Iwuanyanwu Nationale FC, Owerri before starting his professional football career in Cyprus.
He joined Feyenoord Rotterdam FC and on 8th March 1995, he won over the Rotterdam supporters when he scored the golden goal in the KNVB Cup quarter-finals against eternal rivals Ajax Amsterdam.
Ajax won the Champions League that season but were finished off by Obiku thanks to a marvellous solo effort.
He was in the Nigerian Super Eagles team at MAROC 88′ African Nations Cup and also was in the Nigerian Olympic team in 1988.
Our discussions centered on his playing career, his experience on and off the pitch, ultimately his love for Feyenoord FC and commitment to the country.
Mike Obiku is indeed an inspiration to many of us in this country and we are proud of him.
